I was sooo looking forward to my hike this weekend.. I had the perfect trail planned- supposedly the best in Nashville. But after 24 hours of rain and potential for storms, best to stay inside.
Whether weather, time or circumstances prevent you for going for your longed for hike, I have 5 things to keep you busy when you can’t hike. Keeping focused on the outdoors while staying in.
Movies
Wild
This well known book and movie is a powerful story that creates longing for a great hike.
A walk in the woods
I just finished this movie and it was pretty good. But my husband says the book is tons better but I’ll have to take his word for it.
Tracks
Not really hiking but the scenery is gorgeous. Based on a true story in the 1970s, its about a woman who walked some camels across Australia. I’m pretty sure her challenges are similar to those of through hikers.
long way up
The Long Way Up is not about hiking but of a motorcycle trip across South America to eventually end up in LA. There are 2 other movies they’ve done on different continents. The views are Ah Ma Zing! They’re on motorcycles, imagine how much more remote scenery you could see by foot?
Mile…mile and a half
I’ve seen it but don’t remember much (See, my memory sucks) but I know I enjoyed it.
Find me
This movie is a little odd and longer than it should be but the sentiment and scenery make it worthwhile
Books
wild
I recently finished this book and is usually the case, enjoyed the book more than the movie.
a walk across america
I started reading this not realizing it was from the 1970s. The bell bottoms and afros momentarily confused me. It still offers an amusing and inspiring look at non traditional hiking.
The oregon trail : a new american journey
While not about hiking, the sense of adventure and wondrous scenery makes it compelling with a touch of history.
Plan you next hike or travel
If you never can find the time to plan a great hiking weekend, here’s your chance. Where have you been really wanting to go but just couldn’t. Find the trail, find accomodations, notify friends if want them along. Is there any special equipment you may need that you don’t have ie bear box, bear spray, water purifier?
I find great joy in planning. I truly believe a plan is a must have before the adventure begins. My husband vehemently disagrees, he loves spontaneity. I seem to makes lots of plans that too often do not come to fruition (especially now during the corona). I’m REALLY working on changing that.
Find or create a hiking journal/log
I’ve recently been working on one of my own. I’ve looked at many sources to try and see what info and prompts I want to include. Pinterest and Etsy have many examples to draw from. I’m thinking of printing mine out professionally but may just make plain copies until I’m happy with my design.
I’m not a journaler so mine leans more toward a log. I have a rather crummy memory. I would love to have one place I can look back through to see which trails I’ve done. Since this is yours, you can include whatever you like. Or you can download mine and see how it works for you. I would love your feedback!
Learn a skill
Always wanted to learn how to tie knots? Identify all those weird plants on the trail?
Todays the day.
I signed up for a map and compass class last year. I’ve only watched 2 videos. I REALLY need to get better at reading maps and I’m fairly clueless about compasses.
I also could really use more help with starting a fire and gear selection and taking better nature pics and on,on,on…
I know not being able to hit the trail when you really feel the urge sucks. But here are a few amazing ideas of activities to do that will motivate and inspire you towards your future jaunts.
Don’t forget to get a copy of my hiking log/journal
